Moncton, N.B. - The Moncton Mustangs, defending 2025 Maritime Football League champions, are set to close out their 2026 regular season on June 6 at Rocky Stone Field, hosting the Valley Razors in a 5 p.m. kickoff that doubles as a preview of next week’s semifinal. Moncton enters the finale at 3‑0 with a dominant 138–3 point differential, while the Razors sit at 1‑2 and locked into fourth place. With both teams already guaranteed to meet again on June 13, this matchup becomes a crucial tone‑setter for the playoff showdown ahead.
At the center of Moncton’s offensive success is former Mount Allison Mounties, and veteran Mustangs quarterback David Patry, who has opened the season with eight touchdowns and no interceptions, guiding an attack that has been both explosive and ruthlessly efficient. His command has been amplified by a powerful and skilled offensive line led by future Hall of Famer Greg Kinsman, whose unit has bulldozed the way to 10 rushing touchdowns in just three games. Their physicality has allowed the Mustangs to dictate the pace of every contest, wearing down defenses and opening lanes that few teams have been able to contain.
Head coach Corey Lirette says the team’s success is rooted in preparation and discipline rather than expecting blowouts. “We tend to look at how we do the little things, how we prepare for the little things,” Lirette said, pointing to the team’s near‑perfect
record. “To be averaging 46 points per game offensively… to expect that every single week is not what we do. We know that we have to take care of the little things twice a week for four hours.”
That attention to detail has shown up in ball security as well, where Moncton has committed just one turnover all season. “We only have one turnover offensively across three games, and that’s due to attention to detail — not only by the players but by the coaches who understand the Mustang standard and won’t settle for anything less than championship performances,” Lirette said.
On defense, the Mustangs have been suffocating, allowing only a single field goal all season. Their dominance begins up front with a defensive line that may be the most feared in the league. Former CFL standout Reece Martin, a product of the Mount Allison Mounties, brings professional‑level strength and technique. Alongside him, 2025 Defensive Lineman of the Year Justin MacLeod continues to terrorize opposing backfields, while perennial All‑Star Gabe St‑Germain remains one of the MFL’s most consistent disruptors. Together, they’ve formed a front that has given opponents virtually no room to operate.
Lirette emphasized that the short MFL season leaves no room for complacency. “We have so few games, which results in so few opportunities to basically miss on our success points,” he said. “We don’t have a lot of leeway in terms of missed opportunities because with playoffs right around the corner after our season finale against the Razors, we have to be tight on all cylinders.”
He added that the team’s preparation extends far beyond the field. “That’s in our details on the field, that’s in the details off the field — keeping ourselves healthy, watching film, putting in the extra time… coaches scouting film, players applying those points to practice, and making sure we understand our responsibilities come game day. Because of the buy‑in from committed players and committed coaches, we’ve reaped the benefits of that attention to detail.”
For the Razors, the game offers a chance to test adjustments and build confidence before the semifinal rematch. For the Mustangs, it’s about sharpening their edge, protecting their health, and reinforcing the habits that have made them the league’s most complete team. And for fans, it’s a rare treat — a season finale that doubles as a preview of the playoff clash everyone has been waiting for.
